Silica Compliance for Concrete & Masonry Crews

Every time a crew cuts block, grinds concrete, or tuck-points mortar, it generates respirable crystalline silica — particles small enough to lodge deep in the lungs. OSHA's silica standard for construction has been enforced for years, and it is a routine finding on masonry and concrete jobs. The good news: compliance is mostly about method, not expensive air monitoring.
Table 1 is your shortcut
The standard includes a menu of common tasks — saws, grinders, drills, mixers — paired with specified control methods. Follow the control exactly for your task and you are not required to do your own exposure air sampling. That's the fastest path to compliance for a small crew.
Use water delivery or vacuum dust collection as specified for the tool
Match the respirator to the task and duration the table requires
Keep the control running the entire time the task is performed
Don't dry-sweep silica dust — use HEPA vacuuming or wet methods
The written exposure control plan
You need a written plan that names the tasks you perform, the controls you use, and the person responsible for enforcing them — your competent person. This document is the first thing an inspector asks for, and it's the easiest point to lose if it doesn't exist or names no one.
Housekeeping is where crews slip
Most silica citations aren't from the cutting itself — they're from the cleanup. Dry sweeping and compressed air re-suspend everything you just controlled. Wet methods and HEPA vacuums keep the dust down and keep you compliant through the end of the shift.
Control the tool and control the cleanup. Miss either one and the exposure — and the citation — comes back.
Prove it without a lab
Following Table 1 means your proof is your process: the plan, the trained competent person, the equipment in use, and a signed record that the crew was briefed. Capture those digitally and your silica program is inspection-ready without a single air sample.
